Bike facilities

From "South Duke Street Mobility"

Go to the project

It seems likely that the City will want to install dedicated bike lanes in the corridor. I sense that the primary motive is to slow traffic, not to make cycling safer. This should only happen IF the bike lanes are completely outside the door zone of parallel-parked cars. It is skills, proper attitudes, and obeying traffic laws, not bike lanes, that make cycling safe.

If the motive is to slow traffic, there are better ways to do it: back-in angle parking if the street width permits (and it does on at least one side, if not both), high-visibility crosswalks with warning lights, and R4-11 signs and sharrows (instead of bike lanes).

Cyclists should not be used as pawns in the pursuit of other objectives, like traffic calming.

Well put. I have once seen a biker on Walnut using the lane.

@Sindy Pollard Thank you. I also rarely see anyone using the Walnut St. lane, but to be fair, I would not expect many cyclists in the winter, especially with the recent snows we had. After the December snowstorm the bike lane was unusable because it hadn't been cleared even though a snow emergency was declared and Walnut is an emergency street.
