I LOVE LANCASTER | ME ENCANTA LANCASTER

From "Ewell Plaza Art Explorations"

Go to the project

The I Love Lancaster project transforms the parking garage utilitarian structure into a celebration of Lancaster’s free spirit, rendering the Lancaster Public Library as an inviting, vibrant, and young building open to all.

The red tonality of the screen resembles the reddish warm colors of the city. Additional colors highlight the new cultural rainbow representing Lancaster today. Together, the colors of the screen add a new layer of hope and pride to the plaza commemorating the extraordinary life of Barney Ewell.

The letters on the screen announce the library below and invite the children to discover the written secret message. The new polychromatic garage and library façade celebrates through the language of color the extraordinary diversity and inclusive character of Lancaster and welcomes all to enjoy Ewell Plaza for generations to come.

I like the message but don't love the presentation. Too jumbled. I'd rather something more subtle that will make us think, "I love living in Lancaster!" but without overtly stating it. I'm coming back to add that after viewing all three and really reading everyone's feedback, this one is also my least favorite. It's one thing to have fun with words and letters, but the first two lines are "normal" with only the third word being "playful" and that's inconsistent and probably why this one bothered me, but I didn't exactly know why at first. [Part of the design commentary mentioned children having fun figuring it out -- but that would 1) only work on their first trip; so the puzzle would get old and 2) the library is not just for children -- this is a resource and a literal link to services for so many adults in our area as well and 3) since the design is for the greater area and not just the library, it seems, again, too specific to the building it adorns.]

What about sustainability, and green design as in a wall of plants, or perhaps an artistic projected design that show movement and could change with the times and seasons and events please?!! These are all very stagnant designs that seems to be controversial and will date themselves quickly.
It looks like a kindergarten bulletin board. No.

Please NOT this one. This is horrible. Not easy to read for someone who may struggle with reading skills-- and on the side of a library? Oh bother. . embarassing

This design is kind of an anywhere USA choice. Unfortunately none of these really are very good. They don't honor or depict the culturally rich city they will overlook. The comments I've read here about choice of materials ring true but I am primarily struck by how none of these designs tell any visual story that relates to, or inspires this unusual city. I hope it's not too late to go back to the drawing board. There are many excellent local artists and designers that might help. This is an inspiring place. It deserves an inspiring visual...

Sorry but what’s LNATRACSE? This is so cringey. Actually they’re all terrible. Have the artists am ever been to Lancaster? I suspect they’re not from here at all. It’s a shame because there’s so much great art being made right here

This is very hard to read, especially inappropriate above the sign for the library. This is my least liked design.
