Recommendations - Smart Lights

From "Vision Zero Action Plan Development"

Hi!

I have had this idea in my head for awhile now and never had the opportunity to express it. Hopefully its doesn't just sound good inside my head : P

So distracted drivers are our worst enemies, and they are most dangerous when passing through intersections. I cannot think of a worst situation than a distracted driver blowing through a red light and directly into another driver.

There are smart cars now fitted with collision prediction systems that can negate some of these instances, but not everyone has these luxurious vehicles. Fortunately they might not need them to benefit from this technology. Pair a camera and some machine learning software with a set of traffic lights: now you make the intersection itselfthe collusion detection system. Honestly you might not even need machine learning software, simple out of the box object detection software could get you by. Heres an example of such a system.

A distracted driver approaches a red light. The Smart light system registers that cars approaching from that direction are not in the right of way. A simple analysis tells the smart light the car's velocity is accelerating, predicting that stoppage will not be achieved before the intersection. A circuit is tripped and a horn or light is blared (probably better to have both). The distracted driver and/or other actors in the region are alerted to the danger, allowing them to reactive proactively. Crisis is avoided and the only one wounded is the distracted drivers pride.

There are other applications for such a smart light that i'm sure you car think of (i.e traffic flow). May or may not be feasible with your guys budget. Just thought I'd give it its shout out

Good luck!
