Replace the roundabout with a four way intersection
From "A Stronger Lancaster: Submit Your Ideas"
Go to the project
Almost two years ago a temporary roundabout was placed at the intersection of Park Ave, New Street, and Plum Street with intentions to make it permanent. It has been shown through daily usage and a couple of videos provided by LNP that most drivers don't seem to fully understand how to use this roundabout, either speeding straight through the intersection or stopping to watch for oncoming traffic. The roundabout should be taken out and replaced with four stop signs instead.

It's true that people don't really know how to deal with roundabouts. But that's because there aren't enough of them. As someone else mentioned, good signage is also important.

I think the one thing that this particular roundabout lacks is good signage. The main issue with roundabouts in our area and like this one is the space needed to make them successful (as someone mentioned with larger truck traffic), as well as for pedestrians. But that intersection would need a stoplight before a four-way stop, IMO, since there's another stop so close to it on Plum in both directions.

I agree. It is very unsafe as a pedestrian. Since there isn’t enforcement for traffic violations, cars / trucks continue to misuse the roundabout. Plus very tight for large trucks is to make the turn / go straight without running over the center circle. Not sure how it could be improved but I like the 4-way stop idea better than current situation.

I agree with John Mullineaux, and I add this reason for making it permanent: it eliminates left turns, which are a frequent type of crash, which can be more serious for bicyclists than for motorists. There is only one possible downside: pedestrians are sometimes short-changed when roundabouts are put in, even with high-vis crosswalks.

I ride my bicycle through this intersection and this suggestion is absolutely wrong. In fact, the roundabout ought to be made permanent with concrete barriers. Why? Roundabouts slow traffic without necessarily stopping it A continuous flow is always more efficient than stop & go.
