Church Street Complete Street Project

The City of Lancaster is working to make Church Street a safer, more pedestrian-friendly corridor.

Data shows that things like slower speed limits, fewer lanes of motor vehicle traffic, more visible crosswalks, lighting, landscaping, better sidewalks, and bicycle infrastructure can all help reduce crashes and injuries.

The input and ideas you provide will help make the Church Street corridor a place where people of all ages and abilities can safely walk, ride, drive, bike, and get together.

FINAL CONCEPT

October 8, 2024 - November 28, 2024

The City of Lancaster considered several concept designs for the Church Street corridor. Ultimately, the design that best meets the project's goals and the concerns of the community is Option 1: 12 Foot Shared Use Path.

Throughout the Church Street corridor between Queen and Lime/Vine Streets, the final concept design features:

  • Traffic calming: Reduction of one vehicular travel lane
  • Accessibility: Addition of Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act features to make it easier for people with disabilities to get around
  • Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Improvements: Addition of high-visibility crosswalks and curb extensions to reduce pedestrian street crossing distances; Addition of new crosswalks at Rockland Street and Christian Street; Addition of a 12-foot wide concrete shared use path for pedestrians, bicyclists, and people using wheelchairs and personal mobility devices
  • Greening & Shading: Addition of new street trees
  • Intersection changes: Adjustments to traffic signal timing and phasing, pedestrian crossing reconfiguration, and addition of bicycle crossing facilities

For the segment between Duke and Lime/Vine, the recommended design features:

  • A 12 foot concrete path for pedestrians, bicyclists, and people using wheelchairs or personal mobility devices
  • A 3 foot brick band adjacent to curb
  • 5 foot tree wells & trees along the corridor adjacent to the street
