Eastbound Connector Phase 2: Shippen to Riverside
Project Description
East Bound Connector Route: Phase 2 is part of the City Bicycle Network and the regional Lancaster Heritage Pathway trail network. This segment will run between existing bicycle infrastructure on Shippen Street and planned infrastructure at Riverside Avenue. It will also consider improvements to north-south connections to the McCaskey campus. The route will be designed to create a safe pathway and crossings for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users. There are several potential routes the path could take, including segments of East Fulton Street, E. Chestnut Street, East Marion Street, E. Orange Street, and Alleys 122 & 123.

Phases
Public Engagement 2 - Preferred Option Review
During this phase of the Eastbound Connector Project, we're presenting the "Preferred Alternative" - or the route we believe best meets the project goals, incorporates feedback from stakeholders & the public, and is mostly implementable within the next 1-5 years. We invite the public to provide comments or questions about the preferred route and proposed improvements.
Brief Preferred Alternative Summary: The preferred alternative route follows Fulton Street to Reservoir Street, north to Madison Street, south on McCaskey Avenue, east on Ranck Mill Road and north to Riverside Ave. It provides an eastbound bicycle connection as part of the Lancaster Heritage Pathway, while also improving north-south bicycle and pedestrian routes along Reservoir Street, Broad Street & McCaskey Avenue for students commuting to/from McCaskey Campus schools. Madison Street was not one of the originally proposed routes, but was suggested at the public meeting as a low-volume route already used by cyclists. Madison Street is slightly less direct than other proposed routes, but requires fewer improvements, will have minimal roadway impact (parking loss, for example), and does not require easements or private property access. The City may revisit improvements to a more direct route in the longer term (5+ years). The project includes:
- Major intersection improvements at key crossings, including Chestnut & Reservoir, Walnut & Reservoir, Walnut & McCaskey, Grofftown, Ranck Mill & Fulton, and Ranck Mill & Ranck Ave.
- Minor intersection improvements at all intersections along the route
- Corridor traffic calming to lower speeds and create bicycle boulevards along Fulton, Grofftown, Ranck Mill and Riverside
- New sidewalks and/or shared use path along parts of Grofftown and Ranck Mill
