Eastbound Connector Bike Route: Phase 1

The City of Lancaster is working to implement the "Lancaster Eastbound Connector." This bike route would allow bicyclists to travel across Lancaster City to the east and connect to existing and planned bicycle infrastructure. This project aims to implement recommendations from the county-wide, Active Transportation Plan.

In expanding our bike network we are striving to provide safe biking facilities for the “60% of interested but concerned bicyclists” (page 1-8, ATP). These are people that are interested in bicycling but aren’t doing it because of their concern with the safety of biking with traffic. Facilities like those proposed on Lemon Street are for them, as we try to encourage people to use alternative active modes of travel by providing safer facilities. This improves personal health and the environment.

Lemon Street was identified as the preferred route for the eastbound connector after a transportation analysis found that East Chestnut Street was not viable due to reducing the number of travel lanes. Several alternatives were considered, and Lemon Street was selected based on the number of travel lanes, relatively low existing speeds and traffic volumes, connections to existing and planned Active Transportation Plan infrastructure. Lemon Street is also two-way, which helps slow traffic, and is predominately residential with fewer potential conflicts along the corridor.

Project Overview:

The City is implementing and designing options for a continuous eastbound bicycle connection through Lancaster City via Lemon Street with connections to existing and planned multimodal infrastructure. This eastbound route runs parallel to the Walnut street westbound route.

This Engage Lancaster project focuses on general questions about biking in Lancaster, the Lemon Street bike lane, and asks about design options on two segments of the larger bicycle network. These options are on Buchanan Ave (between College Ave & State St) and Walnut St (between College Ave and Race Ave).

Project Goals:

  • Create an eastbound bicycle connector through downtown Lancaster City
  • Create a low-speed environment
  • Increase safe, biking opportunities
  • Reduce crashes for all modes of transportation

Please Give Your Feedback on:

  • Design options for bike infrastructure on Buchanan Avenue (from College Ave to State St) and Walnut Street (from College Ave to Race Ave). Please see the designs and survey below to share your thoughts.
  • Questions or concerns about the Lemon Street bike lane
  • General feedback on biking in Lancaster City
