Franklin Street: McCaskey Campus Safe Routes to School Project
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national program that exists to promote safe walking and biking to school. There are many benefits to walking and biking to school for students and the broader community, including improvements to student mental and physical health, better air quality, and reduced traffic congestion near schools. This initiative is part of Lancaster’s larger Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in the city.
This project is funded by a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Phases
Concept Plan Development
Our consultants are collecting field data and developing concept designs for the recommended improvements to Franklin Street (shown below). During this phase, use the Street Safety Concerns map to report locations that feel unsafe. For example, where do people tend to speed or drive aggressively? Are there blind spots at intersections or crosswalks? We'll use this information to help prioritize improvement projects moving forward.
